It was the internal production code name. It stood for PlayStation Experimental.

I think SCEA didn't like the name PlayStation and wanted to use the code name as the official name for the PS so they used PSX in early promotion.

However, PSX is actually *not* a valid term to refer to the PS1 anymore as there is an actual PSX.
