  • Does difficulty affect trophies?: No.

Introduction:

Welcome to .hack//Versus! Part of the ドットハック セカイの向こうに (.hack//Beyond the World) Hybrid pack released in 2012 exclusive to PS3, many fans of the franchise rejoiced at the return of the much beloved .hack series. Along with the film in the bundle, fans can now play a brand new fighting game bringing together protagonists from both the anime and games of .hack, including Tsukasa, Haseo, Ovan and more. Although this game is only an import (for now), any fan of this franchise should consider purchasing this game regardless of Japanese knowledge due to the fun, addictive and accesible gameplay as well as the unity of many fan-favourite characters.

Trophy-wise, .hack//Versus is a very easy and quick (P) for a fighter. What you'll be doing in a nutshell is completing the game's story, getting S ranks in all battles (all of which are thankfully infinitely replayable) as well as collecting an abundance of miscellaneous trophies. There are also two online trophies in this game which will more than likely require boosting as it is quite difficult to connect up with legit players on the servers. However with correct planning this (P) can easily be earned over the course of a weekend if you adapt to the gameplay.

The Language Barrier:

Although .hack//Versus has an English main menu, little to nothing else has any inclusion of the English language in this game. You'll be able to get by if you know Katakana however reading the Missions for each Story battle would be a problem. If you're having any troubles check the trophy description relating to your problem or ask the guide writer for some guidance.

I highly recommend reading this if you cannot read the instructions to the battle system of this game or if you simply do not understand it. .hack//Versus has a unique battle system similar to that of the Naruto Ultimate Ninja and Dragonball Budokai Tenkaichi fighting games. Rather than restricted to a certain plane you can freely move around an open area.

There are a number of things explained in both the manual in the game box and the game's チュートリアル [tutorial] which are vital to winning in battles however if you do not know Japanese, you'll be pretty lost.

To begin with, here are the basic, obvious game controls:

  • :ls: = Move around the arena
  • :r1: = Block
  • :cross: = Jump (tap again for a double jump)
  • :l1: = Drop down the Skill Menu

http://i.imgur.com/yr11AFI.png

Here is a breakdown and explanation of all the game mechanics (please look at the above labelled screenshot for reference):

1) Health Bars: This should be kind of obvious. As you battle and you take damage, this will deplete until one of you reaches 0, in which case the other fighter wins.

2) Timer: The default timer is 99 seconds in Versus the World mode, however this can be tweaked in private matches and so on. This is how much time you have left before the match must end. If both fighters still have health before the match ends, whoever has the most health wins via Time Out.

3) Tension Gauge: Common to many fighters, as this fills, more unique attacks will become available for you to use. Getting hit by your opponent or attacking your opponent yourself raises the Tension Gauge. Breaking items in the environment releases orbs which increase the Tension Gauge as well.

4) Tension Gauge Counter: As you fill the Tension Gauge, this counts your progress. Knowing what percent the gauge is at exactly will help you in planning when to use the rewards that come with it, Exceed and Ultimate Skills, which will be explained shortly.

5) Exceed: During battles you can 'upgrade' yourself when your Tension Gauge reaches 75% or more; this is called Exceed. Note that the amount of Tension required to upgrade to Exceed is different for some characters. Your character has temporarily higher attack output, can move around the arena faster and some even have access to new attacks. Sora is the only character of the roster who has a Level 3 Exceed as well, which simply improves her speed and damage output even further. To activate Exceed when you have the required Tension, hold :l1: to display your Skills and press :r1: to activate Exceed.

6) Notifications: These small notifications simply light up whenever your Tension Gauge is high enough to activate any of the visible actions. The square saying 'US' signifies your Ultimate Skill (the strongest attack in your arsenal) and requires 100% Tension Gauge. The square saying 'EX' signifies Exceed and generally requires 75% Tension Gauge, though this differs from character to character. The square of a figure signifies your Crack Burst and requires 50% Tension Gauge. The square of a boot signifies being able to execute a Dash and requires 25% Tension Gauge.

I – Complete Versus The World

Your aim for now is to complete Versus The World mode, the game's Story mode. .hack//Versus has a few twists to keep things fresh and enjoyable during your play; the most important of these being ランク [Rank] and Missions. There are five main Ranks in the game (No Rank, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum), each with a different set of battles to partake in for each character, which get progressively harder as you work towards the final Platinum Rank set of battles. Within each battle, there's also a set of Missions. These are optional 'challenges' within each match which unlock you bonuses such as game OST, player icons and player comments (all of which are required for trophies). The requirements are often simple, such as using a certain type of technique against your opponent X amount of times, interacting with the environment X amount of times, and so on. It would be within your best interest to try and get as many Missions as you can out of the way so the clean-up is shorter later on, but don't make it a priority. Simply play through the game for enjoyment purposes and if the chance arises to clear a Mission or two, by all means, do so. When you finish Versus the World, a film available named [Thanatos Report] will unlock. Watch this for another trophy.

Finally, I recommend you go to Versus Rankers often (after upgrading to a new Rank would be perfect) and press :square: for リプレイメニュ [Replay Movie] and check re-watching each replay. If you have over 300 comments, you earn Support Items and newer, stronger weapons for each character. If you happen to just miss the 300 comment mark and can't get the free item, don't worry, you can clean up later. By the end of this step you will definitely have earned the following:

(B)

(B)

[Thanatos Report]

II – Mission Clean-Up

If things went your way in your initial playthrough or you made Missions an important focus you may not even have to partake in this step. However if you do it is time to complete 100 Missions in Versus the World. Now that you're inevitably more skilled in the game, you may want to clean up on a few Bronze Rank battles that you may have missed when you were still getting used to the mechanics, as they'd be significantly easy Mission-wise. There a total of 195 Missions so there is a lot of leeway in terms of how you can get the related trophies. All the requirements for each Mission in every battle is detailed in the battle description, however if you cannot read Japanese then please refer to the Mission Guide. When the related trophies have unlocked you should have all player icon/comment/BGM and wallpaper trophies. Now that that's over with, it's time to move onto the main bulk of the (P) after having earned the following, that is, if you did not already earn them in the first step:

(B)

MISSION CONTINUES

(S)
MISSION COMPLETE

(B)
[Wallpaper Collector]

(B)
[Wallpaper Obsession]

(B)

[Title Lover]

(B)

III – S Rank Clean-Up

You may have gotten a handful or more S ranks in your initial playthrough but now it's time to clean up what's left. S ranks are influenced by a number of actions and consequences in battle and Missions play a big part in the rating too. The general rule of thumb for every S rank is to not lose any rounds and try to keep as much health as possible, while clearing any Missions you can for those vital bonus points. Try to clear as many of them as you can but try not to distract yourself too much on Missions and remember that clear time and remaining health are the most important factors. Again, keep the Mission Guide by your side whilst going for S ranks. A thorough breakdown on all requirements for S ranks are detailed under (G) オールS [All S]. After this, you should have little to no work left to do for the (P):

(S)

オールA [All A]

(G)
オールS [All S]

IV – Online/Offline Versus

The Offline Versus mode trophies are very easy and simple to get – and thankfully, a second controller is not needed. All you'll be doing in essence is playing Offline Versus five times. This is cumulative so it does not need to be done all in one go; same goes for Online Versus.

For Online Versus, if you have a boosting partner, this should take no more than 30-60 minutes. It is quite difficult going for the online trophies legit in .hack//Versus (especially if you're not within Asia, as it is safe to assume, goes for the majority of readers for this guide) due to time zones and connection issues. So find yourself a boosting partner in the .hack//Versus Boosting Thread. Even better, there is no winning-specific trophies online so you will both unlock the online trophies at the same time. Please read (G) 宮皇 [imperial Palace] for further details on how to boost the trophies and navigate the online menus. After this short step, you will now just have to do a little bit more for the (P):

(B)

[Arena Battler]

(G)
宮皇 [imperial Palace]

V – Miscellaneous Clean-Up

Any trophies that you missed, now's the time to clean them up. You should have little to nothing left for the (P) (perhaps, but unlikely, the time-related trophies) so quickly earn them now to finally get all trophies in .hack//Versus:

(B)

[Maturing Player]

(S)
[Veteran Player]

(P)
The World: VERSUS

Conclusion:

.hack//Versus is a great game for old fans of either the anime or PS2 RPG series, and will give you some major nostalgia when you see all the characters again after all these years. Not only this, but any fan of fighters will definitely find interest in this game what with its easy-to-play, rewarding combat system. This game as well as the animated .hack//Beyond the World movie makes this a collector's item worth forking out the cash for.

[VERSUS: The World]

[unlocked all trophies.]

Congratulations on earning the .hack//Versus (P)! You are the master of The World!

[Chimuzu Kicker]

[succeeded in getting the first attack 10 times.]

To earn this trophy you must be the first player to deal damage to the opponent in a match. If you find yourself later on in the game and still do not have this trophy, an easy move to use for the first attack in a match is Tsukasa's :square: button move.

[super Class A Beaten]

[succeeded in using Just Escape 10 times.]

Just Escape is when you press :r1: just before an opponent's attack hits. A short cutscene happens when you successfully use a Just Escape and your character moves behind your opponent whilst dodging their attack, putting you in a very advantageous position. The timing window for a Just Escape can be tricky to get. However, the 殴られ屋免狀 Support Item makes the timing required for a Just Escape much more lenient.

[Those who Escape Predicaments]

[succeeded in using a Crack Burst 10 times.]

Crack Burst is a technique available to use in the game and requires 50% Tension. The move blasts the opponent away from you and is useful for when you are stuck in a long combo. The move can be used with :r1: and :triangle: when you have enough Tension. This trophy will in turn help you progress towards [Those who Blow].

[Those who Blow]

[succeeded in knocking down the opponent 10 times.]

A Knock Down is when you make the opponent fall to the ground forcefully as a result of a combo or Crack Burst. This miscellaneous trophy is easily the hardest to miss since almost every combo in each character's move list results in some form of Knock Down. However, a surefire way of earning this trophy quickly is by using Crack Bursts as they almost always result in Knock Downs. [Those who Escape Predicaments] for further details.

[Guard Breaker]

[succeeded in using a Break Attack against the opponent 10 times.]

A Break Attack is a move which can be used by pressing :triangle: (or by holding :triangle: for a stronger variation, which still unlocks the trophy). This launches the enemy into the air and usually allows you to follow up with a mid-air combo. Using this technique ten times unlocks the trophy.

[Technician]

[succeeded in using any variation of Skills.]

Skills are stronger moves in the game which differ from character to character. Pressing the :l1: button on the field brings down a list of Skills available for use. This trophy is almost impossible to miss as many Missions require you to use Skills.

[ultimate Technician]

[succeeded in using 5 Ultimate Skills.]

Ultimate Skills are the strongest attack each character has and can deal an incredible deal of damage. Ultimate Skills require 100% Tension and can be blocked by opponents, however do note that if your opponent blocks the Ultimate Skill or you miss the opponent, 50% Tension is taken away (though this slowly regenerates in time). This trophy is almost impossible to miss as many Missions require you to use Ultimate Skills.

[skill Finisher]

[succeeded in using any variation of a Skill as the finishing blow 5 times.]

This trophy asks you to finish a total of five rounds using any Skill, be it regular or Ultimate, as the finishing move. This trophy is almost impossible to miss as many Missions require you to use Skills as the final attack in a round.

[ultimate Finisher]

[succeeded in using an Ultimate Skill as the finishing blow 5 times.]

This trophy asks you to finish a total of five rounds using an Ultimate Skill as the finishing move. This trophy is almost impossible to miss as many Missions require you to use Ultimate Skills as the final attack in a round.

[Descendant of Fiana]

[Achieved a Perfect.]

To Perfect a round, you must finish the round without losing any health whatsoever. You will most likely unlock this trophy naturally at one point. However, if not, go back to any No Rank match with improved gear and maybe a Support Item to finish off the easy opponents quickly.

[All S]

[Cleared every Battle Point with a Grade S.]

This is the hardest trophy in the game as it requires you to complete every single Battle Point with every character with an S rank. This includes all No Rank, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum sets of Battle Points, creating a combined total of 71 Battle Points to earn an S rank in. There are multiple factors in which you are evaluated in when it comes to getting S ranks:

  • Time: How quickly you finish the match.
  • Life: How much health you have leftover by the point each round ends.
  • Quality: Your overall quality of fighting and how well your moves are executed.
  • Mission: Bonus points for how many Missions are completed during the match.

The amount of points you are aiming for is at least 80,000. This may sound daunting and it certainly can be if you go in unprepared, however there are a few tricks which can make the task a little bit easier to jump into.

Support Items

Support Items are items which give you new attributes varying on all different levels, such as making your Tension rise quicker, to improving your ATK and so on. There are many different Support Items and you can actually use whichever one you feel most comfortable going for S ranks with, however the general recommendation is the 鬪士王の血 Support Item, which increases your ATK by 50%, a massive boost. Further details on how to unlock Support Items under (B)エッジマニア [Edge Mania].

Getting Perfects/Finishing Rounds Quickly

Getting Perfects in rounds and finishing rounds between the 65-70 second mark can give major bonus points which can change your grade dramatically. Although using Ultimate Skills and Exceed give points for good fighting, if you take a lot of time to win the round or lose a lot of health, you won't be getting an S by the end of the match, so this actually plays a large role.

Stronger Equipment

Using stronger items will benefit you greatly in earning S ranks. The beginning equipment for each character is enough to simply finish matches but in getting an S rank their properties can leave you at a major disadvantage. The method for earning new equipment for each character is the same as getting new Support Items, so please read (B)エッジマニア [Edge Mania] for details on how to get these.

Missions

Missions can give up to 15,000 points extra for clearing all of them. Try to clear as many as you can as these can often be the safety net when going for an S rank, however don't go out of your way too much and be distracted by them, as this can lead to you losing out on other factors of the S rank run.

So by the time you start going for S ranks, you should have the following:

  • The Support Item 鬪士王の血 equipped, giving you 50% ATK up
  • The strongest weapon equipped for each character

With the aforementioned equipment, you can easily get the easier Ranks (No Rank, Bronze, Silver) in a matter of 2-3 hours. Gold and Platinum Ranks is where these equipment actually become a must since the opponents become a lot stronger and will no doubt prove at least a bit of a challenge for you. When you earn S rank in the final Battle Point, the trophy will unlock.

There are different requirements for each Mission such as finishing a round using a certain Skill, breaking X amount of objects in the environment, etc. There are a total of 195 Missions so there's a lot of leeway in terms of how you can unlock them; you can skip certain Missions if you don't feel up to the task and you won't feel very restricted. If you cannot understand Japanese, please refer to the Mission Guide for each Battle Point's Missions.

To unlock Support Items and weapons, you must clear Battle Points. Then go to Versus Rankers. Press :square: to shift to リプレイムービー [Replay Movie]. Here you can re-watch your matches with each character. Whilst you watch, comments will flood in cheering you on, commenting on how the two characters fight, their quality of fighting and so on. To unlock the Support Item or weapon for that replay, you need at least 300 comments. Anything less than that and the unlockable will be locked out until you top that score. Here are some techniques which have been found to garner comments:

  • 18-21 comments automatically at the beginning of the match
  • Winning rounds, completing rounds without losing any health or completing rounds with an Ultimate Skill can give 30+ comments.
  • Skills or combos can give about 5-10 comments
  • Winning the match gives 30+ comments
  • Ultimate Skills give roughly 20 comments, whereas Ultimate Skills as a finishing move can give 20+ comments
  • Stopping fighting and moving away from the opponent sometimes gives a handful of comments
  • Breaking objects in the environments in the stage sometimes gives a handful of comments

Please note that if you have a Player Rank of 99,999 and have not reached 300 comments, you will not be able to save over that replay and thus will have to start the game over in a new file, however you will keep all current unlocked items such as equipment. If you must do this, I recommend leaving this trophy for last and getting it after finishing everything else for the (P).

To play in Offline Versus, choose Versus in the main menu and then Offline. You'll be brought to a character select screen. Select 1P vs. CPU for the most efficient results. Choose your character, and before choosing your opponent's, press the :start: button and choose the second option. Here you can adjust the CPU's settings to make this quick and easy. The first option sets the amount of rounds in the match, the second is the amount of time in each round and the final is the CPU's difficulty. To make things as easy as possible, change the rounds to 1, time to 30 and difficulty to one star. Now go ahead and choose your opponent's character. After one match, you will unlock (B) バトルビギナー [battle Beginner]. After five matches, you will unlock (S) バトルマスター [battle Master]. (Using the リトライ(Retry) option after a battle still unlocks the trophy).

To play Online Versus, choose Versus in the main menu and then Online. You'll be in the online menus. [Rank Match], both work for the trophy. Whichever you choose, in the next menu you can choose from Quick Match, Custom Match or Create Match respectively. You'll most likely have to pick Create Match since you'll be boosting, as finding legit players is not very easy. In the next menu, switch the first option to 1, the second to 50 and the last to 'ON'. Press :r1: to then invite your boosting partner. After five matches, the trophy will unlock. You can find yourself a boosting partner in the .hack//Versus Boosting Thread.

Note to readers: If you cannot find any boosting partners since few players on this site have actually imported this game, I'm always willing to help out someone in need. Simply hit me up with a PSN friend request mentioning .hack//Versus and I'll help you out as soon as you can.

Trophy guide is awesome, definitely receives my kaiwaii seal of approval. Great job with going in-depth with the Katakana. This will definitely help me and many ohters who can't read it. :D

Appreciate that you noticed it! Gotta make it as easy to navigate as possible for those who don't know the language, right? Thanks for the 'kaiwaii' seal of approval

Nice guide, MsFuruba, but you forgotten the overview.

Lolwhoops, forgot to copy over. Cheers, added. :D

Such great guide! I'm currently in the Platinum rank right now.

And I got stuck in a few combo missions, like Kite and Ovan. I don't know how to make a 30 combo with those two. Do you have any tips? I remember Ovan can make a such combo when he is Exceed, but I don't know how to make it.

Also, how can I say which one is the best weapon to each character? Since Haseo, Kite, Sakuya and Sora use the same kind of weapon? I did some tests and it seems the last weapons isn't necessarily the best one.
